If you’re like the rest of us, you want to start the New Year off right by getting in shape and eating better. We all try new diets fads, and we can never really find that one diet that fits our lifestyle and we can sustain all year. Over 20% of New Year’s resolutions are for “getting healthier”, and 80% of those resolutions unfortunately fail.
Consumer News and World Report came out with the best diets of 2018, and we wanted to dig a little deeper into the top 3 “healthy” diets highlighted for 2018.
The DASH Diet
The DASH Diet was developed by The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and its main focus is preventing and lowering blood pressure (hypertension). The diet puts emphasis on increasing nutrients like potassium, calcium, protein and fiber that are proven to be crucial to fighting high blood pressure. This is a “common sense” diet that emphasizes those foods your mom always told you to eat, like fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. On the flip side, you should limit your intake of foods that are high in saturated fat, such as fatty meats, full-fat dairy foods, tropical oils, and sugar-sweetened beverages and sweets. The Mediterranean Diet
If you’re looking to lose weight and just feel better overall, this diet could work for you. The Mediterranean Diet is focused on weight loss, heart and brain health, cancer prevention, and diabetes prevention and control. The Harvard School of Public Health and Oldways, a nonprofit food think tank in Boston, developed this consumer-friendly diet that lowers your intake of red meat, sugar and saturated fat, and increases your intake of produce, nuts and other healthful foods. The Flexitarian Diet
This healthy eating diet’s description is in the name, Flexitarian. It is a flexible take on the vegetarian diet, and it focuses on weight loss and generally better health. The concept here is that you’re a vegetarian during the bulk of your eating, and can indulge in that steak or hamburger when the urge hits you. The concept revolves around adding 5 food groups to your daily diet. These are “the new meat” (tofu, beans, lentils, peas, nuts and seeds, and eggs); fruits and veggies; whole grains; dairy; and sugar and spice (everything from dried herbs to salad dressing to agave nectar sweetener).
