Discover
Lancaster, Ohio
Three years before Ohio became a state, Lancaster had started its road to cityhood. Ebenezer Zane helped establish Lancaster in 1800. If the name sounds familiar, it is because he helped develop the first main “road” in the Lancaster area. Zane’s Trace was a major road in early Ohio until well after the War of 1812, in the Northwest Territories that connected Wheeling, Virginia, to Maysville, Kentucky. Zanesville, Ohio, was one of Ohio’s three capitals that were named after Ebenezer Zane.
With the travelers to the new settlement being of mostly German heritage, the newspaper Der Ohio Adler was printed, and it was one of the first printed words in the area.
By 1812 Lancaster, Ohio, had nearly 350 residents and was designated as the Fairfield county seat. With the integration of the canal system, Lancaster was now linked to Athens, Ohio. The early settlers mainly consisted of farmers until 1854, when a railroad was placed, and textiles, glass, and, most notably, natural gas could now be shipped around the country. Economic growth boomed.
Lancaster, Ohio, also has a strong history in the Civil War. Not only was it a secure stop on the Underground Railroad, but General William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio. General Sherman is most famous for his “Shermans’ March To The Sea.” General Sherman’s house is now a museum you and other families can visit. Another museum that should be seen, if not for history, just for architecture, is The Georgian. Built for the MacCracken family in 1832 by local builder Daniel Sifford. The exterior of both The Georgian and Shermans’ homes both are a take on Federal and Greek Revival architecture, which are absolutely beautiful inside.
Other claims of fame for Lancaster include the Fairfield County Fair. The Fairfield County Fair is the longest-operating county fair in Ohio, held every year since 1850. The county fair is also the last one in the state every year and gained the moniker “The Last and Best of the Season.”
