Delaware, Ohio, was founded in 1808 by Colonel Moses Byxbe and Henry Baldwin, selling lots within the town for thirty dollars each. Although houses, businesses, and a courthouse began to spring up as early as 1807, it was not until 1815 that the town was officially incorporated. Since its early years of settlement, Delaware has continued to prosper due to its location on the Olentangy River and proximity to Columbus. Delaware supported several early industries, including stores, taverns, sawmills, flour mills, and wool factories.
Today, Delaware has won many awards, including the 2021 Best Hometown in Ohio, Top 50 Best Places to Live in America, and an award-winning downtown area.
Lewis Center was founded in 1850 by a local landowner William Lewis. He had donated the land to make the town because he wanted the naming rights. Up until 1863, Lewis Center was deeply involved with the Underground Railroad. Even though Ohio was a “free” state, the Ohio Fugitive Slave Act still allowed for escaped slaves to be captured and returned to their owners. Lewis Center and nearby Africa, Ohio, were both stops on the Underground Railroad and helped slaves escape their previous lives. The Delaware County
Historical Society offers a tour of the houses rumored to be a part of the Underground Railroad.
Today, Lewis Center is the perfect escape into the elements. With an abundance of outdoor space and activities, explore everything from caverns to scenic hiking trails. Residents of Lewis Center enjoy all the activities the town has to offer, from hiking to shopping.
